Ottawa's Maturing Neighbourhoods

ABOUT ROSALINE HILL

Rosaline is the Principal Architect of Rosaline J. Hill Architect Inc., an Ottawa based full service architectural practice with a focus on infill housing. Before founding her practice in 2011, she worked for a decade at Barry J. Hobin and Associate Architects, as well as 4 years working in architectural offices in Toronto and in London, England.

For almost 20 years, Rosaline Hill has been engaged as an architect in the work of designing residential buildings of all shapes and sizes within existing Ottawa neigbhourhoods. Her work as  a designer has been restricted by the patterns of infill development that are dictated by regulations, real estate demands, and construction economies.  Her day to day experience in applying regulations to residential projects, one job site at a time, has equipped her to understand the impact of bylaws and fee structures on housing typologies as they shape the housing market in our city.

Rosaline also works as a development consultant, providing 'highest and best use' analysis for residential development lands (determining the development strategy that yields the greatest return on investment).  This work has honed her skills in understanding the impact of regulations within the context of our housing and construction markets, a skill that is indispensable to her clients, but of equal value to our city planning process in the writing of our new Official Plan and Zoning Bylaw.

Rosaline continues to research the role of residential development patterns in impacting climate change, housing affordability, walkable lifestyles, social cohesion, and population diversity.  The focus of her research is the fabric of maturing urban neighbourhoods, and the housing typologies that they contain.  Her vision; transitioning our existing neighbourhoods to be healthier and happier communities, by establishing new regulations that allow developers to build in patterns that achieve our collective goals.

Rosaline has a Bachelor of Architecture and a Bachelor of Environmental Studies from the University of Waterloo, and is an active member of the Greater Ottawa Home Builder's Association (GOHBA), serving on the Urban Infill Council. Rosaline is a member of the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA), The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC), and the Ottawa Regional Society of Architects (ORSA).
