Ottawa's Maturing Neighbourhoods

FROM CRITERIA TO REGULATION

Neighbourhood Parking Lots

Walkable neighbourhoods will require community parking lots. Zoning must allow for these to be developed now for immediate use, or developed below condos with the intention of transitioning them into neighbourhood use over time.

Many European cities rely on community parking lots to park cars that are not used for daily commuting.  In the Netherlands, well know and admired for it's cycling lifestyle, 70% of households owned cars in 2012, 35% owned two or more cares.  Even in communities where daily trips are made on foot or on bike, cars are used and need space to be parked.  As automated vehicles come into more common use, cars need not be parked next to our dwelling units -- we can call them to come pick us up.
